چکیده

Spectral element methods have previously been successfully applied to direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows with moderate geometrical complexity and low to moderate Reynolds numbers. A natural extension of application is to large eddy simulation of turbulent flows, although there has been little published work in this area. One of the obstacles to such application is the ability to deal successfully with turbulence modelling in the presence of solid walls in arbitrary locations. An appropriate tool with which to tackle the problem is dynamic estimation of turbulence model parameters, but while this has been successfully applied to simulation of turbulent wall-bounded flows, typically in the context of spectral and finite volume methods, there have been no published applications with spectral element methods. Here, we describe approaches based on element-level spectral filtering, couple these with the dynamic procedure, and apply the techniques to large eddy simulation of a prototype wall-bounded turbulent flow, the plane channel, using a mixing length-based eddy viscosity subgrid-scale model. The methods outlined here may be carried over without modification to more complex geometries. 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Large-Eddy Simulation of the Lid-Driven Cubic Cavity Flow by the Spectral Element Method

This paper presents the large-eddy simulation of the lid-driven cubic cavity flow by the spectral element method (SEM) using the dynamic model. Two spectral filtering techniques suitable for these simulations have been implemented. Numerical results for Reynolds number Re = 12000 are showing very good agreement with other experimental and DNS results found in the literature.

A coupled approximate deconvolution and dynamic mixed scale model for large-eddy simulation

Large-eddy simulations of incompressible Newtonian fluid flows with approximate deconvolution models based on the van Cittert method are reported. The Legendre spectral element method is used for the spatial discretization to solve the filtered Navier–Stokes equations. A novel variant of approximate deconvolution models blended with a mixed scale model using a dynamic evaluation of the subgridv...

Large-eddy simulation of the flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity

Large-eddy simulations of the turbulent flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity have been carried out at a Reynolds number of 12000 using spectral element methods. Two distinct subgrid-scales models, namely a dynamic Smagorinsky model and a dynamic mixed model, have been both implemented and used to perform long-lasting simulations required by the relevant time scales of the flow. All filtering lev...

Spectral Element Based Dynamic Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Channel Flow

In this study the dynamic Smagorinsky model (DSM) has been incorporated into a spectral element method and applied in a large eddy simulation (LES) of a turbulent channel flow. The dynamic procedure estimates the parameter of the Smagorinsky model (SM), thereby allowing for an adaption of the mixing length to the local turbulent state during the simulation. As expected, strong fluctuations of t...
